Residential Data & Settings Transfer

Instructions for transferring a users documents and settings from one computer to another.

1. XP to XP network transfer

Transferring between two XP machines using the network crossover cable.

To use this process, both computers need to be fully useable with displays, mice, keyboard and network ports.

If both computers meet the above criteria, continue.

  1. Turn on both computers.
  2. Plug the network crossover cable into both PCs.
  3. Log into the old PC using the account name to be transferred.
    1. Open the properties for the LAN network connection and set the IP address to 192.168.2.1 . Netmask = 255.255.255.0. Save the new network connection property.
  4. Log into the new PC
    1. Create a new user account on the new PC with the same name as the old PC.
    2. Log out of the new pc then log back in using the newly created account.
    3. Open the properties for the LAN network connection and set the IP address to 192.168.2.2 . Netmask = 255.255.255.0. Save the new network connection property.
  5. Old PC
    1. Goto START, RUN and type migwiz.exe then OK.
    2. Follow the Migration Wizard instructions. Remember, this is the OLD computer and you are going to use a direct connection.
    3. Select Home or Small office network.
  6. New PC
    1. Goto START, RUN and type migwiz.exe then OK.
    2. Click to select the I don't need a Windows XP CD-ROM. I have already collected my files and settings from my old computer check box.
    3. Follow the Migration Wizard instructions. This is the new computer and you are using a direct connection.
