Add A Home Network Shared Printer
How to add a workgroup or home network shared printer. This is slightly different from the Business environment.
The greatest difficulty with explaining how to connect to a shared printer is that there are so many ways to do it. This is made even more difficult by the ability to change Windows menus and desktops so it is impossible to know which ways are not available. Example: The icon for My Network Places may or may not be on your desktop, start menu, explorer, ....
Instructions
- Click Start -> My Network Places -> View Workgroup Computers.
- Double Click the computer whose printers you wish to access.
- Right click the Printer you wish to add to your computer and click
Connect. This will add the remote shared printer to your local list of available printers. - Repeat step 3 for each printer and step 2 for each computer with a shared printer attached.
Notes from Microsoft
- To open Printers and Faxes, click Start, click Control Panel, click Printers and Other Hardware, and then click Printers and Faxes.
- You can also connect to a printer by dragging the printer from the Printers folder on the print server and dropping it into your Printers folder, or by right-clicking the icon and then clicking Connect.
- Another way to add a printer is to double-click Add Printer. This option is available only if folders are set to the Windows XP classic folder look, and if a printer is not currently selected.
- After you have connected to a shared printer on the network, you can use it as if it were attached to your computer.
